Alfero Gelato - The Taste of True Blue Italiano

Brimming with excitement always at Alfero Gelato. Marco, the owner always have innovative flavours to share.

Oh yes, it was still Chinese New Year at that time. Alfero Gelato came up with a Pineapple Tart Gelato! I am not a pineapple tart fan, mainly because, the calories and sweetness are just too much. However as Alfero Gelato is 96% Fat Free, I would have no qualms eating.

Alfero Gelato strongly advocates the use of natural ingredients to create the flavours.

Even my little girl loved Alfero Gelato.

I am happy to share that Alfero Gelato is one of the 16 finalists in Gelato World Tour's Vote for the best gelato flavour competition!

Their Gelato entry:

• Chendol Merdeka Gelato
Chendol, a traditional dessert rich in flavour, strong in character. One of Singaporeans’ favourite desserts, Alfero Gelato turned this quintessential dessert into a gelato form. Combining the fragrance of coconut milk, freshly squeezed pandan juice, flavourful gula melaka, velvety red beans and smooth chendol (green starched jelly), Chendol Merdeka Gelato is created to commemorate Singapore’s 50th Birthday, which also explains why the word ‘Merdeka’ is added to the name, and the love for local food by the locals. Dive into the sensationally creamy delicious Chendol Merdeka Gelato, perfect for the sunny days in our bustling city.

Featured on The Straits Times, Marco shared how he got inspired to come up with the Chendol Merdeka Gelato flavour that won the hearts of the panel to get Alfero Gelato into the Final 16 to pit against the rest for the Best Gelato Flavour victory.

If you wish to show your support, do drop by to cast your vote! I will be going with my family to show our support to Marco for such an innovative creation.

Introducing Mookata Set from Chang Thai

A quaint authentic Thai Cafe in Bishan; whom never fail to offer the best and freshest food.

I was delighted to be back to taste their newly-introduced Mookata set. What is a Mookata anyway?

It is a grill hot plate surrounded by  steamboat moat from Thailand.

Heard so much from friends and the media on Mookata but seriously this was my maiden attempt at Mookata.

Perhaps it was due to a steamboat incident happened a decade ago where the oil from the hotplate popped onto my nose and left me scarred for months. I was totally traumatised and swear off steamboat for years.

Mookata is rather different. No oil was used, the fats came from the meat. Much healthier and definitely safer unlike the typical hot plate steamboat. Water is poured on the lower part of the plate, hence will not end up having oil popping all over.

See how we use the fats to go over the entire skillet pot.

A set for 2 pax cost S$39, which includes generous serving of ingredients.

How can we do without the chilli? The chilli sauce is a special concoction from Chang Thai. However if you want it to have more stronger flavouring, add in the garlic to the chilli sauce. Or if you are into spiciness, add the small chillies which I guarantee can surely 'numb' you.

For me, just adding garlic will do.

The happy girl savouring her mookata.

A refreshing Lemongrass was a good choice for a Hotpot session. Freshly extracted and brewed from natural Lemongrass, it was a must-order.

My must-order. Mango sticky rice. Sweet slices of Mango with glutinuous sticky rice and a generous spread of freshly squeezed coconut milk. So heavenly. Burp burp.

Domino-ing the evening away

My personal favourite, "Meatasaurus" with loads of Beef Pepperoni, Ground Beef , Mushrooms, Smoky BBQ Sauce and Cheesy Crust.

You can choose from the variety of scrumptious sides and delectable desserts from their Double Delights promotion. Some worthy mention of the side combos I tried. All the sides in Domino's are baked. Hence they are healthier to consume.

The Garlic Twisty Bread looked hard. I had a bite and fell in love. It was soft and fluffy.

Garlic Cheese Onion Rings

Cinnastix with the sauce

Crazy Chicken Crunches (Original Flavour)

The to-die-for Chocolate Lava Cake. I was very surprised the Lava Cake was really delicious. The warm chocolate flowing out of the pure chocolate cake.  Not too sweet, the taste was just perfect!

Napolitana Baked Meatballs. The perfect combination of tomato and cheese sauce on top of the meatballs. All baked to perfection. Meat was not chewy.  Ideal for the meat lover.

New Additions in Spicy Thai-Thai Cafe

The chefs at Spicy Thai-Thai Café are always creating New dishes so customers are never bored of going back. To add more "Spice" to the repertoire of traditional dishes, they created these few new fusion dishes for a East-meet-West flavour.

I started with the Nacho Chips with a Spicy Thai specially-made Avocado Dip. Avocado dips are own-made from scratch using fresh avocadoes.

The taste was so refreshing and I couldn't stop munching. Do you know that Avocadoes have lots of health benefits? They can help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of diabetes, promote lower body weight and prevent cancer. So healthy food does not equate to awful taste afterall.

Nacho Chips with Avocado Dip at $12

I jumped with excitement upon seeing the Pork Porridge on the new menu list. I always love Pork Porridge. When  I saw it being served, it gave me a feeling of being at Home. The taste of the porridge felt like it was cooked with love by mum. Yummy! This savoury and flavourful dish was warm and comforting. It is a favourite with the Teochews in Thailand too.

Pork Porridge is at $5

Instead of using oil, the chef opted to use water for healthier eating. One of my favourites for the evening. I was intrigued by the crispy sun-dried fish. They looked like a beautiful garnish and actually equally tasty to eat. The kind of creativity and thoughts put into a simple egg dish. That is amazing.
Water-Fry Egg with Thai -Style Crispy Sun-Dried Fish $12

Fish Maw Crab Meat boiled in coconut husk was like a match made in heaven. Chef added fresh coconut flesh inside too. Together with the seafood, they brought out the real sweetness in the soup. Everything just tasted perfect.

Fish Maw Crab Meat Soup at $28 (4-pax portion)

I was always so full whenever I did food tasting. This time was no exception too. However, I just had to taste the dessert Tapioca with coconut milk. Tapioca was steamed and mixed with freshly squeezed coconut juice. It was truly sinful but irresistible.

Snippets on Spicy Thai

Spicy Thai-Thai Café was founded by homegrown businessman, Ron Poh five years ago. With the success of its first outlet in Jalan Besar, the second shop was sprouted at Aljunied Avenue 2 in 2013.

Ron has an unexplained affinity with anything Thai, from culture to food. What started out as a passion for seeking authentic Thai food results in him wanting to present the most authentic experience for his customers at Spicy Thai-Thai Café.

Come on down to have your taste buds sing and dance to the symphonic orchestra of flavours at Spicy Thai-Thai Café now.

Chang Thai, the authentic Thai people

Scouring around Singapore for Thai food is such an easy feat but to locate an authentic one with reasonably prices is relatively hard.

Chang Thai is a quaint Thai eating place in Bishan opened since Jan 2014. Founded by three friends who share a common love for authentic Thai food. Together with Chef Alex from Thailand who had a bountiful 30 years of cooking experience. He is only 42 years old now!

The team strongly believed in using the freshest ingredients to maintain the quality of food. I was looking forward to try their food upon receiving the invite.

The 3 Musketeers; John, Mitsu and Ian
(from left to right) Chef Alex was camera shy.
A simple Beef Noodle soup made with love. The beef were soft and tender. They were not hard or chewy. The beef balls! Oh yes, I took the chance to take a bite. They had no smell, simply tasted so good. I am liking beef balls now!
A combi of prawn cake, fish cake, toufu and spring roll.

They were equally good. Freshly fried, did not feel oily at all!
Chef Alex added Tao Suan to the spring roll fillings. That makes it even crunchier! Yums.
Another delicacy. Honey-glaced Garlic Chicken. I love it at the first bite. Chicken pieces were tender. Honey and garlic was a great combination. Initially I thought thigh meat was used, hence for the tenderness. Chef Alex actually used Breast Meat! Oh wow that was amazing!
The Tom Yum seafood had just the right flavours. Not so spicy. Just felt like in Thailand now.
The Fried Basil Pork was so mouth watering. Couldn't stop eating once started.

Though I was already very full but how could I stop without trying their desserts!
Jackfruit slices were spotted on the Red Ruby. Surprisingly the jackfruit complements the rubies very well, not overpowering.
The rubies were crunchy and not starchy at all.
Mangoes used must be sweet or else they will not be served. That was how strict the bosses were on the quality of food. Fresh coconut milk was used for the Mango Sticky Rice. Slurps.
Using freshly brewed Green Tea to mix with milk. A refreshing drink on a hot, sweltering weather.

Burp! I was so stuffed but feeling satisfied. I wish I could eat more but next time then:-(

Grubilicious in the Park

We finally made it to Grub in Bishan Park! Yippee! There were available seats. We never felt so lucky. The last time we came with our girls, we had to go as we had to wait for at least 45 minutes. Poor girls were starving and we had to detour elsewhere.

Located in Bishan Park. Such a tranquil location for dinner after a stressful work day.

In Grub, they believed in eating responsibly by using natural ingredients when possible. This is amazing since eating out always means piling on so-called junk food. This place is indeed a rare gem in the north.

We started with Chili con carne which is corn chips with beef mince and sour cream. The chips were crispy and yet not oily. The dipping sauce tasted just right, not salty at all. You will not feel sinful indulging in this dish.

I took the Grub Cheeseburger. With a generous spread of Monterey Jack Cheese, freshly made beef patties, green leafy vegetables with pipping hot french fries. It was really good. I finished all up swiftly.

Hub took the Crispy Fish Burger. You could taste the freshness of the fish. Soft fluffy bread with the battered fish, easy and would not feel so sinful after eating.

We were already full to the max after the appetizer and main courses but how could we leave Grub without trying their desserts. I was so sad I didn't make it for their special: donuts with salted egg dip. Just hearing the name made me drool. Oops. Today their special was Chocolate cake with Vanilla Ice-cream. It was light, chocolate was not over powering. There was strawberries too that helped in digesting a portion of the food, I hope.

We were happy and satisfied after the meal. Prices were reasonable, we spent about $55+ including taxes.

The place was amazingly packed almost daily. Judging by the crowd, you can be sure they have a strong following.
